It was quite an experience to walk through the crowd that gathered together at Square Victoria on April 2. Students, teachers and unions came together to protest a number of issues: the main ones being austerity measures and cuts to government spending. Even the police, who had a large presence at the gathering, were still silently protesting the changes to their own pensions.
The word “festive” has been used to describe this protest, and I would agree with that. Although the issues at hand are serious to the ones who participated in the two and a half hour march through downtown Montreal, the key takeaway is that their defiance to the government was done in a jubilant manner. They came together as one enormous group to loudly, but peacefully, speak out against the issues that they believe in.
