These are the heroes of Florence. Giants and Gods alike. These are their frozen faces in battle, in triumph, in love and at peace. We stare up and marvel at them just as people have done for centuries, and the same frozen faces stare back.
Who else walked this very square in a different age and stood on these very steps? Did they wish that they could forever capture the sights of Florence and share them as we can now?
At night the plaza is empty. Visitors retreat to their hotels and restaurants. Residents enjoy dinners at home with loved ones. It is quieter, and a cool wind kicks in. Electric lights have replaced oil lamps and torches before them, but these faces are still the same. Forever looking back at us. Forever frozen in time.
